Annaprasana and solids

While my grandparents were visiting, we took the opportunity to conduct a lovely little ceremony for Nisha called Annaprasanam. The ritual is when a senior member of the family feeds the baby its first solid food, normally a rice pudding. This is followed by a little game where the baby gets to pick out one of a number of objects, which indicate the future direction its life will take.

Nisha loved the sweet milk of the rice pudding, although didn’t really know what do with the solid ricey bit so that came straight out. And, as with her brother before her, she picked a nice ‘academic’ route by touching a book and an iPhone (of course her Dad placed that strategically). She steadfastly refused to look at the gold bangles I waved in front of her for fun. So no worries about a future love of bling, which is good news for our bank balance.

A few weeks after the ceremonial solids, we have earnestly started on mush. 5 months it’s early but the health visitor suggested it after we experienced lots of green filled nappies (seems it’s a sign the baby wants more calories). I’m pleased to say she tucks into rice, daal, stewed fruit and mashed veg with gusto. Of course, solid food means solid poo too! Time to restart the ‘rock-paper-scissors’ nappy changing game.
